The Volute Krater: A Masterpiece of Ancient Greek Pottery

The Apulian red-figured volute-krater, a beautiful piece of ancient Greek pottery, has captivated art lovers for centuries. At the center of the krater is a white altar on two steps, adorned with a chevron-pattern on the cornice and a knotted taenia hanging from the front. The handles terminate in swans' heads, painted white with yellow hair on one side and black hair on the other, with black pupils for their eyes. Above the design, tongue-and-egg patterns encircle the krater, accompanied by maeander and crosses below the handles and palmettes.

On the neck of the krater, two Gryphons rush towards each other, separated by a palmette. The laurel-wreath above is adorned with palmettes on either side. The lip of the krater features egg-moulding on one side and wave-pattern underneath, accompanied by ivy-wreaths and astragalus-patterns on both sides.
